MEET THE BOARD……
David was born in London, England and immigrated to Canada in 1967. He has been a member of the CABP since 2006 and joined the Board as Treasurer in 2011. David is a Certified Public Accountant and held positions in both the private and public sectors until his retirement in 2011.
Significant things that have happened during David’s time on the Board include the incorporation of the International Consortium of British Pensioners (ICBP); the transition to the new Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (CNCA); the introduction of PayPal as a means for paying membership dues; consolidation of the BC office into the National Office in Toronto and the introduction of new membership database (Membee).
David also serves as treasurer for two other not for profit organizations. He lives in Caledon, Ontario with his wife Donna and enjoys travelling and spending time with his three granddaughters.
Ian was born in Victoria London, but at age 10 his parents bought a hotel in Bournemouth and he spent his teenage years in this beautiful seaside town.
After grammar school, he studied Hotel & Catering Management at Bournemouth University and upon graduation he accepted the role of Assistant Manager at the Savoy Hotel in Bournemouth (1972-73). The appeal of experience in a world class hotel in Lausanne, Switzerland (1973-74) was followed by a return to London to the prestigious Churchill Hotel (1974-1975) before travelling to Canada in June 1975. He accepted an offer from the Macdonald Hotel in Edmonton in 1976, intending to work in Canada for a year or two but he met Dianne and his plans were soon changed!
Ian, with two colleagues, formed Renford Inns (1978-1996), a hotel management consulting company, and during these years they assisted over 60 hotels on their business operations. In 1996, Ian built and managed an English-style pub, the Crown & Anchor, in Edmonton, and after 9 successful years of operation, and fed up with shovelling snow, he sold the pub and retired to Vancouver Island. Although he has lived in Canada longer than his birthplace, he still talks of “going home” when he returns to the UK quite regularly. Ian and Dianne have now been married for 43 years and they have 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren, all living on Vancouver Island.
Ian has been Chairman of the CABP since 2017.
During a 40-year career in the financial and professional services sector, Malcolm worked for two Canadian banks, an insurance company, and Canada’s largest accounting and tax firm. While with the Bank of Montreal in the 1980s, he was posted to London, England for a period of three years to manage the bank’s European Systems Development group. This work and residency made him eligible for a UK pension. Malcolm retired in 2009 from Deloitte and Touche LLP as Partner and Chief Information Officer.
Malcolm joined the Canadian Alliance of British Pensioners in 2009 and became National Director of Marketing in 2011 and he believes that the British Government should pay state pensioners the same amount of pension in whatever country they choose to live in and that those people who paid full premiums as part of their taxes should reasonably expect a full pension in return.
Malcolm lives in Markham, Ontario and is married with a couple of children and two outstanding grandchildren. When he is not doing consulting work or community work, he is an avid golfer who spends the winters in Florida.
Fiona was born in Canada to Scottish parents who moved back to Scotland when she was a young child. She lived and did her first degree in Scotland before moving to Canada in 1978 to seek adventure and travel. Several years later, in 2002, Fiona came across a CABP table in a Victoria, BC mall where she lives and, understanding that it was a wise investment, immediately joined CABP. She is very thankful about finding CABP’s display table, as otherwise she would not have known that she was eligible for a British pension. During Fiona’s career, she worked as a clinical counsellor and as a social worker and eventually obtained a PhD in Clinical Psychology. This academic work honed her writing skills which she brings to CABP in the fight against frozen pensions. Beside writing, she enjoys biking and travelling.
Fiona has been a general CABP Board member since 2018 after joining the Board as a general member in response to a request in Justice to help out. She also represents CABP with ICBP. Her passion with CABP is bringing in new members both to support people’s retirement income levels as well as build funds to use to fight the frozen pension issue.
David was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He came to Canada in 1973 for what he calls “the usual reasons – better opportunities, not wanting to be blown up, etc.”
He has an M.Sc. in Finance. His career was in Information Technology, primarily in Financial Services. For the last 20 years he has been an independent consultant, providing enterprise project management and strategic consulting services to various industries.
David has been a CABP member since December 2011. He joined the Board as a general member in response to a request in the CABP in-house magazine Justice to help out. He has served as Chairman of CABP and as a Board member and Chair of the International Consortium of British Pensioners (ICBP). Currently, he supports the CABP Office, Web site and bulk emailing technology.
David recently downsized and moved to Kitchener from Uxbridge, Ontario. He lives with his spouse, Georgette. David’s hobbies are golf, cycling, and music. He is in two rock bands. His motivation to volunteer as a Board member is based on his desire to help out in a worthy cause.
Angela was born in Canada and she has lived here her whole life. She joined the CABP as the office manager in 2013.
She has over 15 years of administration and creative design experience which she funnels into her administrative support for the board members, as well as into managing the CABP’s day-to-day office duties. She absolutely loves working with all the CABP volunteers and CABP board members, and she feels passionate about helping pensioners in whatever way she can towards receiving their uprated pensions.
Angela currently lives in Toronto and although she has not yet visited the UK, she hopes to one day make the journey overseas! When she is not busy managing the CABP office she loves to make fabulous custom cakes and spend as much time as possible exercising outside.
Peter was born in York and was educated in England. He was a National Serviceman and Territorial Soldier serving in the Royal Hampshire Regiment in the West Indies. On completion of National Service, Peter was commissioned into the Dorset Regiment (TA) as a 2/Lt.
He joined Bridport-Gundry Ltd as a commercial apprentice, and then moved into production management. He was appointed works manager (1968), made a Member of the Institution of Works Managers (1971), appointed Director and General Manager of North Mills Textiles (1978), a subsidiary company in the BG Group.
Peter emigrated with his wife and two daughters to Orillia, Canada, in 1984 after being headhunted to join GWB Ropes & Twine as General Manager. In 2011, the family moved to Emsdale in Northern Ontario when Peter retired.
Peter joined CABP in 2006 and was co-opted into the CABP volunteer cohort. He joined the Board as Director at Large in 2019. As part of the Veterans Initiative within CABP he spearheaded the National Service survey. He actively submits articles to senior’s magazines regarding frozen pensions. He does this because the UK government steals half of his pension, as well as yours, every month. He believes that the frozen pension policy will never change unless we fight it.
Peter and his wife look after two of their grandchildren who live under their roof. They own and manage a 12-acre woodland estate. They recently celebrated 48 years of very happy marriage.
Sheila was born in Graz, Austria where her father, was posted after the war by the British army. She came to Canada (the twelfth country in which she has lived) with her husband who obtained a job here in 1994. Her working career was as an HR professional and she worked for a time with Shell Canada.
Sheila became interested in the frozen pension issue in 2000 when she joined the Calgary based to the British Pensioners Association of Western Canada (BPAWC). She was President for a number of years during which time she worked closely with the CABP. Sheila then joined the CABP in 2008 and immediately joined the Board because of her previous frozen pension experience. Sheila has served many roles on the Board including general Board member, Government Relations, Chairwoman, and now Social Media organizer.
She volunteers with the CABP because she believes frozen pensions is a cause that must be resolved, and will only be resolved if we continue to fight for justice.
Sheila currently keeps active with playing badminton, spending time with her family, and making BoHo jewellery. She is a linguist and is currently learning Portuguese.
